Speed
The last thing a user wants to do is wait for a page to be downloaded. People are becoming more and more impatient when it comes to surfing the net. If your page doesn't load fast enough there is a good chance it will be closed down by the user before being viewed.
Don't annoy prospective clients.

Our design goals are to make your page visually appealing while not compromising download speed.

We consider the following points for all our designs big or small...

Page is hosted on a fast server.
All images are optimised for Internet.
Compressed image formats used.
Don't use large Java Applets.
Fast Database Access (for database driven sites).

Clarity
Easy to use, Interactive Intuitive Interface. (It does what you assume it does).
Simple and user friendly (K.I.S.S. Keep It Simple Stupid).
Easy to navigate between pages.

Image
Accurate Representation of Organization
The following should all have a consistent design and feel.
Web Page, Business Card, Stationery.

If you have an existing corporate image it must be portrayed on your site. Give your users a familiar environment. Promote a sense of security.

Design and Layout
Content layout (integrate images and text).
Avoid long paragraphs of text.
Present text in columns.
Present content in point form.
Don't overload user with too much content in one section.
Separation of content (use of negative space).
Don't overcrowd information (looks too busy).
Creative ways of displaying content.

Appealing to Target Audience
When choosing a design be sure to meet your users expectations.
Interesting content.
Interactive elements.
Look and feel.
Incorporate features/services users expect. e.g. Product Catalogue, Pricing, Online Store, Examples of Products or Services.

Often users will visit your page to research a product or service before making contact. Give them useful information that will help their decision-making process.

All the information that is available to a user via conventional means should be incorporated into your web site. Make your site work for you and not against you.

Exposure
Search engine placement.
Advertise your page as much as possible.
Include your web site address on everything,
e.g. Stationery, Invoices, Company Cars, Leaflets...
anything that is viewed by existing or potential clients.

Functionality & Diversity

Don't assume a user has the latest browser with all the plug-ins available.
In fact assume the complete opposite.
Multiple operating system platforms.
Diverse range of browsers.
Low and High Resolutions.
Frames and No Frames.
Avoid links to download plug-ins.
No special features need to be installed on users browser.
